As requested, here are a few basic pointers around the Maat fight for Red Mage (sorry it took so long to get up.) These are my personal observations for the fight (which was a long time ago,) so others are more than welcome to chip in other tips or pieces of advice.
The fight against Maat is a test of not only your skills, but what you have learned as a Red Mage. While he can be killed through straight meleeing, this is incredibly difficult and requires both a lot of preparation and excellent equipment. Unfortunately, dragging this fight out is very dangerous due to the impact of damage Asuran Fists does when he decides to use it on you - so the faster you can take him down, the better. At the same time, it's important that you stay calm and take deliberate actions; if you panic in the middle of a fight, it could be all the opportunity he needs to end it quickly.
The fight is difficult compared to most of the challenges you may have faced so far, but definately doable. Here are a few tips on the most common strategy for defeating him, bind-nuking.
First off, you need to be ready for it. I highly recommend taking a few Yagudo drinks and a Vile Elixer. Viles are pretty expensive, but frankly, they can save your ass when you have no other options left. Other medicinal items (like periskos au lait,) are nice to have, but optional. If everything goes smoothly, this fight should take you between two and three minutes.
You will not have acess to a subjob for this fight, so you cannot rely on the abilities from one to defeat him; this means you have only the tools available to you from your main job at 70. That leaves most of your enfeebles, early Tier-3 nukes, curative and defensive spells. Gravity, Bind and Sleep II are going to be paramount to victory with this strategy. You DO NOT need to be level 70 to defeat him, but it is highly recommended you wait until this time, and until you have had an opportunity to cap both your elemental and enfeebling magic skills, to do so.
You need compitent gear. At this point in the game, I seriously hope that you macro-swap to get the most out of your spells. If not, you need to look up how to do so and begin implementing that immediatly. You should be swapping in corresponding elemental staves and skill/attribute items, in that order of priority. A lot of people have recommended going into the fight naked and then requipping everything as this may lower Maat's base stats. My advice to you is: don't. Time is CRITICAL during the first few seconds of the battle, if you waste it, you are setting yourself up for failure.
And now, the strategy. You will be bind/kite nuking Maat. If you farmed your own testimonies off of the pots in the Upper Delkfutt's tower, or have solo'd ruby Quadavs, you have had excellent practice. If not, then I highly[/u] recommend you try doing so before fighting him. Either of these mobs, especially Rubies, are excellent practice for Maat since you are using the exact same basic strategy to defeat them.
The basic premise is that you rush forward to sleep or bind the mob immediatly into the fight, dispel any buffs they have, and then stick Gravity (and bind if you haven't done so) on them. You want to take this chance to get Blink up on yourself as well, but be careful not to be caught casting when they wake up, as bind has a tendency not to last as long as sleep. If they wake up and begin to rush you, cast an offensive spell on them and then run backwards out of their range. When they close range again, bind them, wait for your recast timer, and then nuke and bind them again.
Rinse and repeat, Resting/Converting as necessary: but beware of converting when Blink is down.
The actual strategy against Maat is very similar, but more difficult than either pots or ruby quadavs. If you have not yet managed to defeat them, you're not ready for Maat. Keep practicing until you can do it consistantly, there's not a race to 75. Other people have gotten it long before you, and it'll still be there while you're waiting. The difference between Maat and these two practice fights is that Maat has, and will use, Asuran Fists. This is devestating, and can cause upwards of 700 damage to you at once. This is why it is extremely important to maintain your distance at all times.
AT NO POINT DURING THIS FIGHT SHOULD YOU CAST A DoT SPELL, LIKE BIO OR DIA. This should seem obvious if you've ready anything written above, but casting these spells will prevent the use of Sleep and cause Bind to wear earlier (since Bind's duration is affected not only by resistance, but by damage caused as well.)
First off, many people recommend you wait until Wind day to begin the fight, to enhance the potency of your Aero III spell. I recommend against this; instead, wait for Ice day to enhance Bind. Your bind recast is somewhat long, you cannot afford resists, frankly. If you don't have all of the elemental staves (there's no excuse for this, they're dirt cheap now,) borrow them from a friend. HQs are a plus, but not necessary by any stretch of the imagination.
When you're ready - warp into the burning circle. IMMEDIATLY run forward upon entering, do not waste any time at all. As soon as you close within casting range, Sleep II Maat and dispel any buffs he has. Make sure you get Blink up on yourself, and use your first Yagudo drink. Stoneskin won't save you from Asuran fists, and you likely won't have time to cast it, but you can try. Make sure you gravity him as soon as possible: if gravity doesn't stick, bind him. When your spells or off, or after he has woken up, cast Aero III on him and then resleep him and get some distance.
At this point, you've probably burned about 250-300 MP, and Maat should be at around 85% of his HP. Re-bind him, wait a little bit for your recast timers, then Aero III him again. You should start to see a pattern by now. When you run low on MP, wait until you have SAFELY slept him and he has gravity up, and do so out of his casting range. If Maat has more than 50-60% of his HP at this point, you need to pick up the pace, as the chance of his using Asuran fists increases significantly as time goes on. Cure yourself, then Chainspell and Aero III/Bind him to finish him off when he's around 50%. If you run out of MP, use your vile elixer.
That's really all there is to this fight. It does take a degree of luck, but this is a consistant strategy that many people have used to defeat him within one or two tries, so it's very possible.
If you're still having a lot of difficulty, figure out exactly what's going wrong. Is he using Asuran Fists early in the fight? Are your enfeebles not sticking? Running out of MP too fast? Once you've identified the problem, find the solution. Practice against Ruby quadavs can really help you get this down to a science; it's not fast, but it works consistantly.
If you've done everything above, then it's up to your skill and a little bit of luck. Keep trying and you'll beat him!
