We've had ICE in Buffalo the past couple days, figured I could maybe take some pictures of our poor trees that were almost wiped out a few months ago.
Why the trees are so f'd up: normally we don't get any heavy snow falls until Thanksgiving at the soonest. In early October, we had 2 feet of heavy, wet snow before any of the leaves dropped, which broke half the branches off most trees...which took down many of our power lines. Buffalo was pretty much entirely without power for 2-3 days, and over 100,000 homes didn't have any for a whole week.
Anyhow, here are some pics from this morning, around my apartment and a few others:
This picture is taken from my balcony. Here's a pic from a few days after the October storm, and what the tree looks like now:
Below: Off in the distance you can see the broken branches on all the older trees. It's not really something you think about, but the city really won't look the same for years.
Below: During the October storm, the snow packed so quickly onto the trees that some of them split right down the middle. The town had bulldozers going around pulling broken branches off the sides of the trees. The ones that split were pretty much ruined - this one, right in front of my apartment, obviously won't last much longer.
My truck was covered in a layer of ice about a half inch thick. We usually get an ice storm like this once every 2-3 years. Normally everyone freaks out about it, but given what happened in October, nobody really cared this time.
Below: The icicles you see hanging off the guy's hat were in the front too - it looked pretty awesome. But someone broke them off the front by the time I got my camera >< Well, at least he's able to read his newspaper with the icicles out of the way...
